Have you ever wondered...
--what is neuroplasticity?
--how does my brain change and how does it affect me?
--what is cortisol and what does stress have to do with it?
Neuroplasticity - Dysfunction and Positive Change!
We've talked before about how your brain is able to change, adapt and create new versions of normal for you. The ability of your brain to 're-wire' itself based on the choices you make is due to neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is the term used for the adaptability and change'ability of your brain!
So what does stress have to do with this? And, what is subluxation?
Your brain and nervous system respond to stress and in turn trigger the body to produce a variety of hormones, to change posture (to a fetal or protective position) etc.
Over time a continued stress response can become harmful to the body and the mind - and your brain begins to think that this is normal. The brain always seeks to maintain normal. This is the bad news.
What is subluxation and where does Chiropractic fit in?
Dr. Tony Ebel describes subluxation as being stuck in stress mode. I really like this idea of subluxation or misalignment - going into stress mode and not being able to get back to non-stress mode. This is a great illustration of what subluxation is.
It would be similar to putting your car in neutral and then pressing the pedal to the medal. You'll use a lot of energy and not get very far.
Subluxation leads to increased cortisol levels which leads to adverse affects on the brain – specifically pre-frontal cortex, anterior cingulated and the hippocampous. This leads to dysregulated brain wave patterns that become ‘hard wired’ through neuroplasticity.
Cortisol is one of your primary stress hormones and it has a huge effect on the body and can effect anything from mood to weight.
So, stress (and subluxation = stuck in stress) can lead to dysfunction in 3 major area's of the brain which we mentioned above. So, let's see what these parts of the brain do for us.
Your pre-frontal cortex is involved with decision making, complex planning, social behaviour and some scientists have even found it to be involved with a person's will to live as well as the expression of their personality.
Your anterior cingulate gyrus and cortex are highly involved in autonomic functions such as blood pressure and heart rate.
Your hippocampus is highly involved in memory.
How can Chiropractic help you? Chiropractic seeks to decrease the amount of subluxation in your life.
It can help you adapt more easily when you do experience stress, decrease your overall stress levels and help you use neuroplasticity to your advantage.
By adding positive neural impulse, you begin to change your brain!
Improving your health doesn't usually happen overnight. It takes consistent effort, creating new habits and a great deal of dedication to yourself.
